We are the solution when orthodontic surgery is needed
Surgical Orthodontics at Charles River Orthodontics
Surgical orthodontics may be recommended when a bite issue or skeletal discrepancy is too severe to be corrected with braces or Invisalign alone, or when orthodontic treatment on its own would result in an undesirable facial appearance. In these cases, orthognathic surgery—a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery—can be used to achieve a balanced and functional bite.
At Charles River Orthodontics, we work closely with experienced oral surgeons to ensure that this comprehensive treatment plan addresses both the functional and aesthetic aspects of your smile, leading to long-lasting, optimal results

Severe malocclusion (or a misaligned bite) can lead to functional issues such as difficulty chewing, speech problems, and facial discomfort, including headaches, jaw pain, and periodontal concerns. In addition, significant jaw discrepancies can impact self-esteem due to visible facial differences. Orthognathic surgery, or jaw surgery combined with orthodontic treatment, can also play a key role in managing obstructive sleep apnea.
Surgical orthodontics is a collaborative effort that requires careful coordination between Dr. Nina Khedkar, your dentist, your oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and you. After determining and agreeing on a treatment plan, pre-surgical orthodontics will align your teeth so they fit together correctly once the jaw is repositioned during surgery. It’s common for patients to feel that their bite is temporarily worse during this phase, as the teeth are adjusted to a “compensated” position. However, once the surgery is performed and the jaws are realigned, the teeth will fit together in proper harmony.
While orthognathic surgery can provide optimal functional and aesthetic results, it is an elective procedure. At your consultation, we will discuss all treatment options available to you, ensuring you make an informed decision about your care.
