Braces Treatment

When it comes to orthodontic treatment, traditional braces are often the go-to option, well-known for their ability to effectively address a wide range of dental concerns. Thanks to recent advancements in technology and materials, modern braces have seen significant improvements. Today’s brackets are not only smaller and more comfortable, but they also provide the same reliable, efficient results while making the process of moving teeth more precise and less noticeable.

Metal Braces

At Charles River Orthodontics, traditional metal braces remain a trusted and reliable option for orthodontic treatment. With a proven track record of success, they are highly effective in addressing a variety of dental concerns, from alignment issues to bite correction.

These braces are made from a durable blend of stainless steel and other metals, ensuring long-lasting performance. The small brackets are equipped with hooks or doors that hold the archwire in place, with the option to secure it using elastic bands or by closing the door. This time-tested system remains one of the most efficient and dependable ways to achieve a healthier, straighter smile.

Clear Braces

Ceramic braces, often referred to as clear, tooth-colored, or aesthetic braces, work in the same way as traditional metal braces.

Designed with aesthetics in mind, these braces are smaller and made from nearly transparent, tooth-colored polycrystalline ceramic material.

Though not fully invisible, ceramic braces are much less noticeable than metal ones and blend smoothly with your natural teeth.

The clear brackets are made from durable ceramic, offering an effective treatment option for those who want the reliability of metal braces with a more discreet appearance.

What can you eat with Braces?

At Charles River Orthodontics, we understand that adjusting to life with braces can take a little time, but don’t worry—you’ll be back to enjoying your favorite snacks like popcorn and chips before you know it! In the meantime, it’s important to avoid certain foods that could damage your braces or slow down your treatment progress.

Foods to Avoid with Braces:

  • Chewy items: Bagels, licorice
  • Crunchy items: Popcorn, chips, ice
  • Sticky items: Caramel, gum
  • Hard items: Nuts, hard candies
  • Foods that require biting into: Corn on the cob, whole apples, carrots

Foods You CAN Eat with Braces:

  • Dairy: Soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks
  • Breads: Soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins (without nuts)
  • Grains: Pasta, soft-cooked rice
  • Meats/Poultry: Tender chicken, meatballs, deli meats
  • Seafood: Tuna, salmon, crab cakes
  • Vegetables: Mashed potatoes, steamed spinach, beans
  • Fruits: Applesauce, bananas, fruit juice
  • Treats: Ice cream (without nuts), milkshakes, Jell-O, soft cakes

Managing Soreness from Braces

It’s completely normal to feel some discomfort when you first get braces, but don’t worry—it will get better as your mouth adjusts. To relieve soreness, try rinsing with a saltwater solution: mix one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water, swish, and gargle for a few minutes (just be sure not to swallow it).

If the discomfort is still bothering you, an over-the-counter pain reliever can help. It’s also common for your lips, cheeks, and tongue to feel irritated during the first couple of weeks as they get used to the braces. We offer orthodontic wax that you can apply directly to the braces to soothe these areas. If you need some, just let us know!

At Charles River Orthodontics, Dr. Nina Khedkar and our team are here to make your orthodontic journey as comfortable and successful as possible.
